Rovers Ride Into Ponferrada, but Belmonte Holds the Reins

Shamrock Rovers bring their long Irish reign to Ponferrada on a Champions League night that will test the provinces against the champions.

Ponferrada should win this, and not merely because the visitors arrive without Padraig Malone. In my day a European night in the provinces was a gift; now it is an expectation, and Fran Belmonte has been playing as if he owns the left flank — four goals in his last five, a 7.78 average, and a 9.1 among the ratings. Götz Rosen against Michael Otterlei looks the mismatch of the evening: pace and dribbling on one side, tackling of 7 on the other.

Rovers have won thirteen Irish titles in a row and know how to grind, and Matthew Fletcher is their live wire, 7.61 across recent games, against Jaime Camacho, whose tackling of 16 makes that duel worth the ticket. But Ponferrada have taken 1.71 points a game in this shape, and with Gino van Velzen and Federico Rocchi carrying tired legs, the hosts will want this settled early. The visitors need everything to go right.
