Nantes Hold the Top as Lyon Breathe Down Their Necks
Fourteen games in, Les Canaris lead Ligue 1 by a single point from Lyon, with Nice and Marseille tight behind and PSG stuck in fifth.

«Un point, c'est un point — but we know Lyon are right there, breathing,» says one voice in the Nantes dressing room, and nobody at the top of Ligue 1 is arguing.
Fourteen games gone, and FC Nantes sit first with 31 points, nine won, four drawn, one lost. But Olympique Lyonnais are a single point back on 30, and their goal difference is the loudest thing about them. Nice are third on 28 after their 2-2 with Paris Saint-Germain, Marseille fourth on 26, and PSG — seven wins, four draws, three defeats — down in fifth on 25. Read that again: the champions of the capital are looking up at four clubs.
This cycle's noise came from Montpellier, who put four past Bordeaux in a 4-1 that lifted them from eleventh to eighth. Lille went to Troyes and came away 2-1 winners. Caen won 2-0 at Lorient. Lens took a 2-1 at Nîmes, points that matter down among the strugglers, and Dijon's 0-0 with Rennes gave the bottom club a crumb of comfort.
Because the bottom is grim. Strasbourg have lost ten of fourteen and sit seventeenth on ten points. Dijon, one win all season, are eighteenth on seven. Lens, despite that win, are sixteenth on thirteen — the survival scrap is already a knife fight.
At the summit, though, it is a sprint. Nantes carry a slender lead and a squad with tired legs; Lyon carry menace. One slip and the Canaris are looking up. The crowd at the top of French football is loud, tight and unforgiving — and it is only November.
