Collins Comes Home To Blyth

Matt Collins was on Morecambe's books in the summer; now he's back at Blyth Spartans on a free, and the old place knows exactly what it's getting.

Summer said Morecambe. November says Blyth.

Matt Collins has signed for Blyth Spartans on a free transfer, and it's a return to a club he knows better than most. The centre-back, 24, was a Morecambe player this season. One game, no goals, and then out of the picture. Now he's a Spartans man again, and nobody at the club needs telling what he brings.

He was there from 2058/59 all the way through to this season, and the numbers tell the tale. 144 games in a Blyth shirt. Nine goals from the back, which is a handy trick for a defender. He'd been at Droylsden before that, 24 games across 2057/58 and 2058/59, learning the trade the hard way.

The whole career reads like a proper lower-league education: five clubs, 169 club games, nine goals, no international caps and no fuss about it. Morecambe was the latest stop. It lasted one match. Football doesn't hang about.

What he walks into at Blyth is a fight, and he'll know it. Kal Bloomfield has made 22 league starts across the last two seasons, and that shirt isn't going to be handed over. Collins has to win it back. He's done it before at this club, and the people who watched him do it haven't forgotten.

There's no fee to argue about, no add-ons to unpick. A free transfer, a familiar face, and a squad that just got a bit more steel in it. For a club at this level, that's the sort of business you take every day of the week.

"Coming back feels right," Collins said. "I know this place. I know what it asks of you. I've been away and I've learned, and now I want to earn my place all over again."

He's not a kid anymore. 24, with more than 160 senior games behind him and a promotion scrap in front of him. The move is done, the paperwork's signed, and the Blyth faithful can start dreaming of a back line that's seen a thing or two.

Morecambe gets a footnote. Blyth gets a centre-back who's been there, done it and come home for more. Steal of the week? For nothing, you bet it is.
