Aydın Lights the Night

Kemal Aydın's hat-trick turned Rotherham United's Champions League night against Dinamo 1948 SA into a 5-0 rout, with Manuel Miranda adding two of his own.

European nights at Rotherham Stadium have become a fixture of the calendar in recent seasons, and the crowd arrived expecting control. What they got was something more clinical: twenty-eight shots, fifteen on target, three strikes against the woodwork, and a Dinamo 1948 SA side that managed three attempts all evening. The Romanians had travelled with a reshaped midfield and lost their regular right winger to a pulled hamstring before kick-off; by the end, the shape mattered less than the spaces Rotherham kept finding inside it.

The night belonged to Kemal Aydın. Three months after his £10.7m move from Beşiktaş, and a fortnight after the debate over whether he should keep the number ten shirt, he answered in the only currency that settles such arguments. His hat-trick came from five shots, all on target, and he covered 12.8 kilometres in doing it — a playmaker's numbers with a forward's ruthlessness. Miranda, alongside him, scored twice and won five tackles, and the pair pulled Dinamo's back line apart with the patience of men who knew the goals would come.

Rodrigues, replaced on 65 minutes, had already laid on two assists; Fábio Pequeno came on for him and added another. Thomas Bernardini, with seven shots and a little over one expected goal to show for them, will remember a night of near-misses more than most. Pedro, Dinamo's goalkeeper, made ten clearances and kept the score from becoming something crueller.

The 5-0 leaves Rotherham well placed as the European campaign gathers pace, and it sharpens the domestic picture too: Sheffield United await on Sunday. Aydın's display suggests the selection headache is over for now. Whether it stays that way is a matter for the weeks ahead, not for one cold, convincing night in South Yorkshire.
