6 Goals, 95 Minutes, No Winner in the Derby

Nice rescue a point at the last, and Marseille are left to wonder how a three-goal share of a classic slipped away.

“We played until the referee would not let us play any more,” said Etienne Fritsch, and he had earned the right to say it. His goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time made it Olympique de Marseille 3-3 OGC Nice, the sixth goal of an evening that refused to settle.

Nice had led through Robert Poch, lost the lead to Ali Dali and Alex Mahe, levelled through Michiel Verweij, fallen behind again to David Molist, and then, at the very end, found Fritsch. He had already made one goal and was the best player on the pitch. Marseille will feel the cruelty of it; Nice, who had the clearer chances all night, will feel something closer to justice. The old boy Emilio Cifuentes, 425 games in Marseille colours, watched his former club concede at the death. Some derbies are decided; this one was merely endured.
