Sarr Turns Strasbourg's Gloom Into A Hat-Trick Of Light

Ismaïla Sarr scored three and made another as RC Strasbourg Alsace routed Montpellier Hérault SC 5-1 at René Hauss Park, a month after the club had lost six in a row.

A month ago Strasbourg were bottom of Ligue 1 Uber Eats with nothing to show for six matches. On Friday night Ismaïla Sarr answered every one of those weeks with a hat-trick, an assist and a display of such completeness that the Montpellier defenders will see him in their sleep for a while yet.

Sarr scored three, made one, took seven shots, put five on target and covered 13.3 kilometres from the left of midfield. A perfect ten. He was replaced in the ninety-first minute, presumably so that René Hauss Park could stand and say what it thought.

Montpellier had sixty per cent of the ball and 515 completed passes to Strasbourg's 340, and it meant nothing. Strasbourg took twenty-four shots, fourteen of them on target, and the scoreline was the honest one. Ourdy Mfumu scored once and cut Montpellier open repeatedly; Mika Hautala made two more; Asier Ramos made another. Daouda Diedhiou, on loan from Villarreal, pulled one back for Montpellier, but the evening belonged to the other end.

The context gives it weight. Strasbourg lost Sami Dumas to a lower back stress fracture and were without Edmundo, so Patrick Navarro came in and Jason Bradbury, seventeen, started at centre-back. Sarr took the burden and carried it as if it were nothing at all. Dumas, who spent three seasons at Montpellier early in his career, watched from the treatment room as his old club were dismantled.

What Sarr offered was not merely goals but order: the calm of a man who knows exactly where the space will be before it opens. Strasbourg had been a team without answers. On this evidence, they have one, and he wears the number seven.

"I have waited for a night like this," Sarr said afterwards. "But one night does not make a season."

He is right, of course. Yet for a club that had forgotten how winning felt, three goals in one evening is a kind of remembering.
