Preston Loan Gives Bartoli His Chance

Daniele Bartoli arrived at Preston North End on a quiet September loan and has quietly turned it into a fight for a starting shirt on the left wing.

Preston North End have found something on the left wing, and it did not cost them a penny.

Daniele Bartoli, the 19-year-old Italian borrowed from Aston Villa on 3 September, has started twice in this cycle after a single start before it, averaging a rating of 6.95, with one goal and no assists. The shirt he is contesting belongs to Mark Wright, and the contest is no longer theoretical.

The pathway explains the patience. Bartoli's senior football amounts to three club games and one goal, all of it in Preston colours this season, after arriving from Villa without a fee and without a crowd of expectations. That is how a young winger should be introduced: quietly, in a division that asks questions of your body and your decision-making before it asks anything of your reputation.

A loan spell is the right place for this. Preston sit at League One level, a national name with twelve major titles behind them, and the demands there are honest ones: run, take your man on, come back and do it again. Bartoli has done enough in two starts to make the left side feel like his, and enough to make Wright's return a genuine selection call rather than a formality.

"He gives us something different down that side," is the sort of thing you hear around a player like this, and the numbers say the same in quieter language.

The next step matters more than the last one. A first senior goal is banked; now comes the harder part, holding the place when the season turns and the pitches get heavier. If Bartoli keeps starting, Preston will have to think about what comes after the loan. Villa will be watching too. For now, the winger is exactly where he should be: playing, learning, and making himself difficult to leave out.
