"We are top, but nobody in Nantes is dancing yet"

FC Nantes lead Ligue 1 after eight games and are the only side still unbeaten, while Lyon's 5-0 and 3-0 wins haul them up to second and leave Marseille and PSG looking over their shoulders.

"We are top, but nobody in Nantes is dancing yet," is the word from the Canaris' dressing room, and you can see why. Eight games, six won, two drawn, none lost, 20 points and a one-point cushion: the summit of Ligue 1 Uber Eats belongs to FC Nantes, who started this cycle sixth and ended it first.

The week's work was neat rather than spectacular. A 4-0 dismantling of Nîmes Olympique got the scoring done early, then a 0-2 win at RC Strasbourg Alsace, and finally the result that mattered most, 1-0 at home to Olympique de Marseille. That last one did double duty: it kept the Canaris unbeaten and shoved Marseille off the top, from first a cycle ago to fourth.

Lyon, meanwhile, have stopped being polite about it. A 1-6 win at Stade Malherbe Caen, a 5-0 thrashing of LOSC Lille and a 0-3 win at FC Girondins de Bordeaux took them from seventh to second on 19 points, with the division's healthiest goal difference. Lille took one point from their two other games, a 1-1 draw with RC Lens following their 2-1 win over Stade Rennais FC.

AS Monaco stay third on 18 despite a 2-1 defeat at FC Lorient, who climbed from sixteenth to twelfth. Marseille are fourth, also on 18. Paris Saint-Germain sit fifth on 17 after a 4-1 win over Montpellier Hérault SC, a position that will not please anyone at the club.

Further down, FC Sochaux-Montbéliard's 2-1 win over OGC Nice lifted them from twelfth to ninth, while Nice had earlier edged Lorient 3-2. At the bottom, Caen have five points, Strasbourg three, and Dijon FCO, with two points and no win in eight, are propping up the table. Nantes, for their part, are enjoying the view.
