“Four clubs, one summit”

AS Monaco remain top of Ligue 1 Uber Eats despite defeat, with Marseille, Nice and Paris Saint-Germain level on points and Nîmes unbeaten close behind.

12. That is the points total shared by the four clubs at the head of Ligue 1 Uber Eats, where AS Monaco still occupy first place after their winning run met its first interruption. A 3-1 home defeat by FC Girondins de Bordeaux has not dislodged them after five games; Olympique de Marseille, OGC Nice and Paris Saint-Germain are level with them, separated in the table by goal difference. The summit is crowded, and Monaco’s margin for elegance has abruptly narrowed.

The French champions of this early autumn are not yet champions of anything. Their opening four victories had offered the clean geometry of a team in command; Bordeaux supplied the crooked line. Marseille made the sharper statement elsewhere, beating FC Lorient 3-0 to keep pace, while PSG defeated LOSC Lille 2-0. Nice also remain on 12 points, though their 1-0 loss at home to Montpellier Hérault SC is a reminder that the table’s top is a gathering, not a procession.

Nîmes Olympique are the league’s unbeaten fifth force, with 11 points from five matches. Their 2-0 victory over FC Sochaux-Montbéliard added another quiet step forward: no defeat, and just one point between them and the leading four. Sochaux, meanwhile, slipped from eighth to 11th. At the other end of the undefeated list, FC Nantes remain unbeaten too, but fell from third to sixth after a 0-0 draw at RC Lens.

Lens have supplied the week’s most striking change of address, climbing from 18th to 14th. The draw with Nantes was followed by a 5-2 victory over RC Strasbourg Alsace, a result with the bracing force of release. Strasbourg have no such relief. Beaten 2-1 by Olympique Lyonnais before losing to Lens, they have now lost all six of their matches and sit bottom on zero points. Their season is still young, but the table is already an unforgiving mirror.

Dijon FCO are also still waiting for a first win: ESTAC Troyes beat them 3-0, leaving Dijon 17th with one point after five games. FC Lorient, 18th, have three points and four defeats. The lower reaches have begun to harden, even as the leaders refuse to separate.

For Monaco, the defeat changes the mood more than the position. They remain first, but Marseille’s emphatic win and the matching totals of Nice and PSG turn every next point into a small argument over who deserves the view from above. Nîmes, unbeaten and within touching distance, are the patient counterpoint. Five games have produced a leader; this week has made clear that it is not yet a solitary one.
