“We wanted to show what we could do,” Sheffield United U21 said after a result that turned the Bristol Street Motors Trophy on its head. Salford City, a League One side, left empty-handed as the young Blades claimed a 2-0 win on 4 September.
Only 899 people were there to see it, but the scoreline carried a sharp message: Sheffield United U21 were not in the competition merely to make up the numbers. For Salford, the defeat was a quiet exit; for the youngsters, a night to savour and a chance to see how far this cup run might take them.
