Could Atalanta Break Brescia’s Derby Grip? Grimaudo Settles It Late

Could Atalanta turn this derby’s recent history in their favour? On 27 August, with the contest still locked and the local rivalry crackling, Riccardo Grimaudo supplied the answer: introduced in the 86th minute, he scored two minutes later to seal a 1-0 victory over Brescia in the Italian Serie A.

The goal changed the night at its most unforgiving moment. Atalanta had to wait, and Brescia had reason to believe they might leave with the points, but Grimaudo’s late intervention tipped a tense contest towards the home side. For Atalanta, this was not simply three points: it was a derby answer delivered when patience was almost spent.

The recent meetings have swung sharply between the rivals. Atalanta won 5-1 on 27 May, but Brescia had taken the January encounter 2-0. Before that, Atalanta won 3-1 in March 2062, while Brescia claimed a 3-1 victory in October 2061. This latest narrow result adds another turn to a fixture that has offered neither club lasting comfort.

Brescia’s resistance made the ending all the more painful. Their hopes survived deep into the match, only for Grimaudo to turn a short appearance into the decisive one. The derby’s drama needed no grand scoreline; a single late goal was enough to send the contest into Atalanta’s keeping.

Both clubs had more Serie A turbulence on 2 September. Brescia beat Fiorentina 2-0 after Jofre Costa was sent off, while Atalanta won 3-1 against Crotone despite Raffaele Mazzocco’s dismissal. Those results offered their own tests of nerve; this derby asked a different question, and Grimaudo answered it at the death. Atalanta can savour the local triumph, while Brescia are left to measure how close they came to taking something from a rivalry that refuses to settle.
