Basque Derby Ends in a Truce as Casado Cancels Mateo’s Blow
José Mateo put A. Bilbao ahead against Real Sociedad, but Jon Casado’s own goal five minutes from time salvaged a 1-1 draw.
José Mateo struck in first-half stoppage time, giving A. Bilbao the lead in a derby thick with old tension. Real Sociedad found their answer in the 85th minute, when Jon Casado turned the ball into his own net and brought the Spanish First Division meeting level on 19 August.
A. Bilbao had won the previous three meetings, but this time neither rival could claim the day. Rémi Follet, now with A. Bilbao after playing for Real Sociedad, gave the fixture another personal thread. The draw offers a fresh chapter for Real Sociedad after their Copa del Rey run, in which they overturned Barcelona’s advantage and reached the final on penalties.
