Can a match without a goal still leave a city with something to celebrate? Qairat Almaty’s answer came from the penalty spot, where they beat Slavia Prague 4-3 after a 0-0 draw in the UEFA Europa Conference League on 30 August.

For the 9,405 people in attendance, the long restraint of the scoreline gave way to the sharp, private drama of the shoot-out: each kick a test of nerve, each save or miss capable of changing the night. Qairat emerged from it with the win; Slavia, a club from Czechia with 36 major titles, were left to absorb the narrowest kind of exit.

The result carries a particular warmth for Kazakhstan. Qairat are a club their country knows well, and this was a chance to put that familiar name into a European conversation through composure rather than goals. There was no need for a sweeping scoreline. A level match and a 4-3 finish from the spot were enough.

For Slavia, well known across the continent, the silence of the net will sting: their progress ended without either side finding a goal in open play. For Qairat, the meaning is simpler and no less substantial. They held firm, took the decision to penalties, and came through.
