Doxa’s three-goal answer turns Fortuna’s European night upside down

A 3-0 victory over Fortuna Sittard gave Cyprus’s Doxa THOI Katokopias a memorable result in the UEFA Europa Conference League.

Before a ball was kicked, Doxa THOI Katokopias had the chance to make a European night belong to Cyprus; Fortuna Sittard came carrying the weight of a respected continental name. By the end, the Dutch side had more of the ball, more attempts and a dozen corners. Doxa had the three goals. At GSP on 23 August, that was the measure that mattered.

The 3-0 scoreline is stark, but the match was not a tale of Fortuna simply failing to arrive. They completed 608 of 665 passes and held 70 per cent possession, while Doxa made 263 of 311. Fortuna had ten shots to Doxa’s seven, and struck the woodwork. Yet only three of their attempts were on target; Doxa put four of theirs there. The visitors’ possession kept the ball moving. It could not undo the damage on the scoreboard.

For Doxa, this was a night of concentration and conviction: the kind of result that gives a club its own place in the wider conversation, rather than merely a part in someone else’s. The Cypriot side needed only one clear-cut chance, according to the match figures, and made its advantage count. There is no need to pretend the numbers describe every nerve in the stands. With an attendance of 1,510, each shift in the match had room to be heard, and a three-goal margin offered a rare sort of release: disbelief giving way to celebration.

Fortuna’s defeat also lands in a busy moment for the club. Agustín Palmieri arrived from Zaragoza for £15.3m on 21 August, a record signing, and Nicolás González joined from Juventus for £5.0m on the day of the match. Neither transfer changes the arithmetic of this result. Instead, they underline the contrast between the ambition gathering around Fortuna and the outcome on the pitch: a side able to dominate the passing, but unable to turn that command into a goal.

The visitors’ most productive individual display came from Martin Bensmann, whose three key passes and eight dribbles could not shift the result. Darren Ouderland completed 82 of 84 passes; Islam Wated completed 93 of 101. Those figures speak to Fortuna’s fluency, and to the particular frustration of a defeat in which the ball so often seemed to be theirs. Olvido Meerzorg was booked in the 29th minute, one of two cautions in the match.

Doxa will take more than a clean sheet from this. A 3-0 win in the UEFA Europa Conference League offers a small Cypriot club a large evening, and a reminder that European football’s meaning is not measured by possession alone. Fortuna leave with the greater share of the ball and no goals; Doxa leave with the result, and a memory their supporters can carry long after the figures have faded.
