Burnley had the greater share of the chances; Preston North End had the substitution that mattered. Colin Neill came on at half-time and scored the only goal as the League One side beat Championship visitors Burnley 1-0 in the Carabao Cup on 15 August.

Burnley mustered 10 shots to Preston’s three and hit the woodwork, but could not turn that pressure into a goal. Alex Gonsalves, named player of the match, supplied the assist; his work helped make the difference in a tie settled by one second-half contribution. For Preston, this was a cup upset built not on volume, but on taking the moment when it arrived.
