A week after Eurico Tavares became Nantes’s all-time leading scorer, Les Canaris supplied another reason for celebration: a first Trophée des Champions since 2059. They beat last season’s winners Lyon 2-1 on 5 August, adding to the 11 titles they had already claimed.
David Mândrescu put Lyon ahead in the 10th minute, but Adama Doukar struck twice, in the 25th and 48th, to turn the final around. Mohamed Najah, who spent six seasons at Lyon before joining Nantes, was on the winning side; old loyalties, it seems, had little say in the matter.
