£15.5m: Hamburg Buy Antonio As Mallorca Sell Their Defence Again
Hamburger SV have signed the Spanish defender Antonio from Mallorca for £15.5m, the second Mallorca centre-back to leave for the Bundesliga this summer.
Every transfer window tells you what the money believes. This summer the Bundesliga has decided that the Spanish second division is where defenders are found cheap, and Mallorca has discovered that a good season at the back is a saleable commodity. Two of its centre-backs have now gone north for a combined £28m, and the club that finished the season proud of its defence starts the new one counting the cash.
Antonio, 25, joins Hamburger SV for £15.5m. He spent nine years at Mallorca, 220 games and two goals, and won a trophy there. He is a national name in Spain, though he has never been capped. At Hamburg he will find a club with 17 major titles and a manager, Simon Borsdorf, who has spent the summer rebuilding. Guillaume Brun arrived from AS Monaco for £11.5m a fortnight earlier; Pavel Kalchev has just been named German Players' Newcomer of the Year. Hamburg are not shopping for stars. They are shopping for a spine.
For Mallorca the arithmetic is more awkward. Edey Ardiles went to VfL Wolfsburg for £12.5m on 21 July. Eight days later the club spent £7.2m on two players, more than anyone else in its league. Sell a defender, buy two footballers: that is the economics of the second division, and Mallorca are working it hard. The supporters will ask whether a defence can be rebuilt as often as it is sold.
Antonio leaves a club where he grew up for one that expects to win. He is 25, with 286 club games behind him and none for his country. Hamburg is where that changes, or where it does not. The fee is the club's judgement; the season will be his answer.
"I wanted a new challenge," Antonio said. "Hamburg is a club that demands something from you every week. I am ready for that."
Whether the selling is finished at Mallorca, nobody in Hamburg will much care. They have their defender. The rest of us can watch what the money does next.
