Reggiana Buy Discipline, Not Dazzle, in Niz

A record £2.9m for a Dutch defender who spent fourteen seasons at one club tells you exactly what Reggiana think they have bought.

"He defends the way we want to defend," the Reggiana man said, and that is the whole transfer in one line.

Leandro Niz arrives from NAC Breda for £2.9m, the largest fee Reggiana have ever paid. He is 29, Dutch, and he spent his entire career at one club: 380 games, 17 goals, two trophies, from 2049/50 through to last season. That is not a career built on noise. It is a career built on turning up, holding a line and knowing where the danger is before it arrives. Serie B rewards exactly that.

I have watched enough defending to be suspicious of the opposite kind of signing. Reggiana have not gone shopping for a highlight. They have paid for a man who has played fourteen years in the same shirt and never needed a new one to feel at home. The fee is a record, but the profile is conservative, and conservative is a compliment in my book.

There is a neat edge to it too: the man they have bought to organise them is the man NAC Breda leaned on for more than a decade. Supporters in Breda will know what they have lost, even if the price is modest by the standards of the leagues above them.

Reggiana's people will expect control, clean sheets and a defender who talks. Niz has the years behind him to provide all three. The money is the story for a day. The defending is the story for a season.
