Sūduva Edge Panathinaikos in a Night of Wasted Possession

A crowd of 1,661 watched Lithuania's small club beat Panathinaikos AO 1-0 in the UEFA Europa Conference League, and the statistics explain how strange the night was.

The tie looked settled before a ball was kicked. Panathinaikos AO, with 32 major titles behind them, came with a reputation that travels; FK Sūduva Marijampolė, a small Lithuanian club, had the night at home. What was at stake was whether the smaller side could make the game awkward enough to matter.

They could. Sūduva won 1-0, and the numbers tell the story. Panathinaikos had 51 per cent of the ball, 13 shots to six, five on target, eight corners, and an expected-goals figure of 1.2 against Sūduva's 0.51. They hit the woodwork. They completed 358 passes to Sūduva's 341. Nicholas Lewis kept things moving with 59 of 73 passes, and still the game slipped away from them.

Sūduva made 18 fouls and collected no yellow cards; Panathinaikos made two and collected one. That is the shape of a night when a team defends its own box with discipline and a little luck, and the favourite grows impatient. One clear cut chance each, and only one was taken.

In front of 1,661 people, the margin was enough. "We defended what we had," one Sūduva player said afterwards, and there was no need to say more. For Panathinaikos, the lesson is plain: possession without a finish is decoration. For Sūduva, the result stands on its own, a night when the small club held and the big name did not.
