Gerlofs’ Grand Entrance: Reggiana Smash Record for Dutch Stopper
The Granata have broken their transfer record to land the experienced Dutch defender from AZ Alkmaar.

“I’ve always admired Italian football’s tactical discipline,” David Gerlofs said as he was unveiled at the Stadio Città del Tricolore. “Reggiana gave me a clear project, and I like the idea of helping a club with such history push for promotion.”
His words carried the calm of a man who has made 222 club appearances, yet the fee – £1.7 million – speaks of ambition rather than sentiment. Reggiana, well known in Italy but eager to return to Serie A, have never paid more for a player. The Dutchman’s arrival is a statement, even if his own profile is modest: a defender who has never won a senior cap for the Netherlands, but one whose reading of the game has earned quiet respect.
Gerlofs, 29, arrives from AZ Alkmaar, where he spent two seasons in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie, making 43 appearances without scoring. He is not the type to grab headlines with goals; his value lies in positioning, anticipation and a reluctance to dive into tackles he cannot win. That restraint will suit a Reggiana side that has often been undone by naivety at the back.
The move reunites Gerlofs with nothing – he has no former teammates at Reggiana, no Serie B history, and no Italian connections. He is a blank slate, which may be exactly what the club wants. The Granata have been chasing promotion for years, and their defence has been a recurring weakness. A record signing in that position suggests a change of approach: less flair, more fortitude.
There is risk in spending such a fee on a player approaching 30, particularly one without international pedigree or top-flight experience. But Reggiana’s management have clearly decided that Gerlofs’ reliability is worth the outlay. He is not expected to transform the team overnight; he is expected to organise it, to make the saves easier for the goalkeeper and the midfield’s job less frantic.
AZ Alkmaar, for their part, lose a player who was never a star but rarely let them down. They have not won a trophy during his time there, and his departure will not cause panic in Alkmaar. Yet his consistency was valued, and his exit leaves a gap in experience that must be filled.
For Gerlofs, the move is a step into the unknown, but one he appears to welcome. “I know what I can do,” he said. “I’m not here to score goals or make the highlight reels. I’m here to defend, to help my teammates, and to win matches. That’s what Reggiana need.”
Whether that need translates into promotion remains to be seen, but for now the Granata have made their intent clear. The record books have been rewritten, and the Dutchman has been handed the task of proving that cool heads can win in the heat of Serie B.
