Roventini kept scoring when Italy needed the road cleared

Goals against Ireland, France and Israel made Giulio Roventini one of Italy’s essential knockout figures.

Giulio Roventini’s World Cup was not built on volume. It was built on timing.

He scored after eight minutes against Ireland in the third round, giving Italy the early control from which a 2–0 victory followed. Against France in the quarter-final, he struck again in the 22nd minute, Italy’s second goal in a 4–0 win. Then, in the semi-final against Israel, he supplied the only goal after 40 minutes.

Three knockout matches, three Roventini goals, three Italian victories.

The sequence reveals the value of a scorer who does not merely add to a result but changes its shape. Against Ireland, his goal settled nerves. Against France, it widened an advantage and forced the match toward Italy’s preferred terms. Against Israel, it was the entire margin between a final and a third-place play-off.

Roventini did not score in the final, where Roberto Baggio took the central role, but Italy would not have reached that stage without him. Tournament histories are often written around the last match because the trophy is lifted there. The path matters just as much. Roventini repeatedly opened it.
