Can Fiorentina's luck hold against a Napoli side in full flight?

The Viola have been living beyond their means all season, and on Sunday they host a Napoli team that has won five straight and shows no sign of slowing.

"We are not afraid of anyone," said Andrea Nazzaro, the Fiorentina right-back who spent eight years at Napoli before switching to Florence this summer. "But we know what Napoli are capable of. We have to be at our very best."

Nazzaro's words carry weight ahead of Sunday's Serie A showdown at the Artemio Franchi, where third-placed Fiorentina host fourth-placed Napoli in a match that could reshape the top of the table. The Viola sit on 37 points from 16 games, three clear of Napoli, but the underlying numbers tell a different story. Fiorentina's 37 points are a full ten more than their expected points, the largest overperformance in the league, while Napoli's 33 are just two above their own xPts. The Viola have been riding their luck; Napoli have been earning theirs.

Napoli arrive in Florence on a five-match winning run, their form as hot as any side in Italy. Rubén Montes has been the catalyst from the left, with three goals and two assists in his last five, while Loris Setti has pulled the strings in midfield with an average rating of 7.4. Fiorentina, meanwhile, have won four of their last five, but their football has been less convincing than their results. Saikou Manneh has been their standout, with two goals and an 8.3 rating in his last outing, but the team's expected goals against suggest they have been conceding chances at an alarming rate.

The last three meetings have all gone Napoli's way, including a 1-0 win in Naples in April and a 2-1 victory at the Franchi last December. Nazzaro, who made 50 appearances for Napoli, knows better than most what his former club brings. "They are relentless," he said. "They press high, they move the ball quickly, and they have quality in every position. We have to match their intensity."

Fiorentina will be without Matteo Sarini, Jeremiah Chukwu and Filippo Riccio through injury, while Napoli are missing Ljubomir Sekulović, Elias Adam and Alessandro Paiano. Both sides have fitness concerns, with Fiorentina's Gianpaolo Massimo and Napoli's Basile Pirson both carrying tired legs. The key battle could be on the flanks, where Luciano Acquaviva's pace will test Stéphane Assélé, and where Montes will look to torment Nazzaro on the left.

The stakes are clear: a Fiorentina win would open a six-point gap and cement their status as genuine title contenders. A Napoli victory would pull them level on points and send a message to the rest of Serie A. For the Viola, the question is whether their luck can hold for one more Sunday. For Napoli, it is whether their form can translate into points against a side that has defied the odds all season.
