Can a tired Cluj hold off FCSB's hungry chasers?

Leaders CFR Cluj host old rivals FCSB on Saturday with an unbeaten league run on the line and tired legs in the home dressing room.

For years the question in Romania has been not whether anyone can beat CFR Cluj, but whether anyone can stay close enough to make the spring interesting. On Saturday, in the last league game before Christmas, FCSB arrive in Cluj with a chance to remind the country that the old rivalry still has teeth.

Cluj sit top with 53 points from 20 games, unbeaten in 17 league matches, and have won their last three meetings with FCSB without conceding. Yet their numbers are less comfortable than the table suggests. They have scored 58 goals from 45.1 expected, and their 12 conceded have come from 15.5 xG against. In short, they have been clinical and a little lucky. FCSB, for their part, are fifth with 34 points from 19 games but ninth on expected points, having conceded 22 goals from 27.9 xG against. Neither side is quite what the raw league position says.

The visitors travel without Albert, their leading striker, who is recovering from a virus and expected back around 28 December. Cluj are missing Jefferson José with pulled ankle ligaments, and their expected line-up shows the strain of a long autumn: Éverton, Rafael, Dariusz Michalik, Juan Carlos, Romeo Matei and Cosmin Lupu are all carrying fatigue or low condition. The home side's expected 4-3-3 DM Wide has served them well against FCSB's likely 4-2-3-1 DM AM Wide, with a 2.4 points per game record against that shape, but tired legs make pressing and quick transitions harder.

The duel to watch is on Cluj's right, where Andrei Dobre's pace and dribbling meet Vasilică Pavel's more modest physical gifts. Dobre has two goals and an assist in his last four games; Pavel will need help from his midfield. On the other flank, Cosmin Lupu's recent form – 8.1 and 7.0 in his last two outings – offers Cluj a second route behind Antonio Bermejo.

Then there is the old boy's return. Gabriel Costache spent five seasons at Cluj, playing 59 games and scoring seven times, and won three trophies there. Now he anchors FCSB's midfield, and he has been out of form, averaging 6.5 over his last four games. A quiet performance would be one thing; a mistake against his former club, in a derby that Cluj have dominated, would sting.

Cluj's run of eight straight league titles ended after 2060/61, and FCSB would love to push them further from the summit. A win would cut the gap to 16 points – still vast, but a statement before the winter break. For Cluj, the fixture is about protecting a sense of inevitability that has been built over a decade. The stadium will be full, the air cold, and the home side will know that their unbeaten run, like their season, is a thing to be defended with tired legs and sharp minds.
